According to Yahoo News…..President Obama charged Wednesday that Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan are out to slash Medicare benefits while leveling dishonest attacks on accusing him of doing the same thing. The President said that this is not true..
They are just throwing everything at the wall to see if it sticks, the president said at a rally in Iowa. Republicans have accused the President of cutting Medicare, and slashing benefits for the past year. They also have said that the presidents Medical reform Package, otherwise known as Obama Care will increase the cost of family Medical care across the board including Medicare and Medicaid. The Republicans say that they have a better plan.
However, President Obama counters that his plan has already extended Medicare by nearly a decade, their plan ends Medicare as we know it and replaces it with a State Voucher system. The President said, “My plan reduces the cost of Medicare by cracking down on fraud, and waste, and subsidies to insurance companies. Their plan makes seniors pay more so they can give another tax cut to millionaires and billionaires”.
Countering the president, the Romney camp accused Obama of slashing Medicare by $716 billion, in part to pay for his landmark health care law, popularly known as Obama care. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus charged in an Op-ed published Wednesday that Obama “is the only candidate in this race willing to let Medicare die”.
Both sides are grappling with Medicare’s ballooning share of federal spending, fueled by an aging population and costly advances in health care. Republicans pointed out that Obama previously denounced political grandstanding on the issue only to it in the aftermath of Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as his VP running mate.
In most cases these arguments foment around an issue while either party avoids any real position on a matter in fear that their position might impact their chances of election down the road. But it could be that in this particular case, as well as hot button issues like Social security that both candidates might have to be up front on the issues this time around or risk losing the valuable vote of Senior Citizens in key States, especially Florida.
Up against the wall, Paul Ryan is expected to address Medicare at a rally in Ohio. The Republican Vice Presidential Candidate is expected to address the brewing debate over his plan to overhaul the nation’s Medicare system on Wednesday at a rally in Oxford Ohio.
No matter what is said there, it goes without saying that at least for the moment this is the “Hot Button Topic”, and Seniors are going to be paying very close attention to what Ryan says and whether or not Mr. Romney supports his VP Candidates position. On various occasions since picking Ryan, Mr. Romney has reminded listeners that he is the candidate for President, and, pardon the pon dear reader, The buck stops here”!
It is still to early though to tell if there might be a riff between the Romney and Ryan. That is as to just how conservative and to the right they will go if elected.
Meanwhile the Romney camp continues to focus on the economy and slow recovery in a persistent attempt to steer listeners away from this particular hot topic that is starting to boil. There are hints however, that the Obama tactic is working, pushing Romney against the ropes, forcing him to spill the contents of his plan for Medicare, Medicaid as well as health care reform. Governor Romney has already admitted that after repealing Obama care he would introduce his own healthcare reform act. I guess we might dub that Romney care.
No doubt Healthcare reform is a coming thing. But the question is who will end up getting hurt worse by any given reform act being proposed.
Only time will tell.
