What did Obama know about the Libyan attack and the death of an American ambassador, and when did he know it? That seems to be the latest tactic of the Romney campaign as well as conservatives out to oust Obama from the White House.
As I understand the flap Republicans are accusing the President of being lapse on the Libyan crisis where the American Embassy was set on fire, and attacked by Muslim mobs angry at The United States over a film insulting the name of Mahmud. As a result radicals hit the streets and attacked the embassy as well as launching grenades etc;. This resulted the death of the ambassador and three marines.
As the events unfolded and became more and more clear, the attacks had all the ear marks of a terrorist attack. Intelligence sources suspected that the release of the film was used to whip up a public frenzy and use this as a cover for the attacks and assassination of the ambassador Chris Stevens. The White House, although aware of the suspicion, was careful not to endorse the Intel reports until all the facts were in. Now, Mr. Romney, Republican Candidate for President decided that this was the golden opportunity to jump the gun and show just how Presidential he was, and how good of a leader he was. Using the opportunity to get one on Obama, he calls a press conference, and makes it clear that he disagreed with how The President handled the crisis, and described the Presidents response as despicable. Wisely, the President ignored the jab, and waited until the next day to respond to the issue and that was not until he felt he had sufficient data to do justice to any statement to the public.
Many would have thought that was the smart move to make. Never jump the gun, have the facts, know the story! The White House agreed that the release of the film might have been used as a cover to attack a U.S. installation, but the jury was still out. However, he was sure that the newly formed government of Libya was not involved. The president put pressure on their newly formed government to get to the bottom of this, and arrest the individuals responsible. This tactic of course was used to check their loyalty. No doubt our Intelligence personal were working to obtain all the information needed to clarify as to whether this was or was not a terrorist attack.
Now, today, before a closed-door senate intelligence hearing it was apparently expressed that it was in fact a terrorist attack coinciding with the NYC 911 attacks. The film was used as a cloak or cover, to hide the real perpetrators.
Of course the Romney campaign is crying out that they would have handled the situation differently, that troops would have been considered, that a strong military is needed in the Mid-East to deal with terrorist infiltration, and that Obama’s Foreign Affairs policy is not good for the security of The United States and of course, Romney has a better plan.
Rush Limbaugh of meanwhile is having a field day and hinting at some grand conspiresey to create Mid-East unrest and get Americans behind Obama.
As I see it though, the President was wise to make sure that all his ducks were in a row before moving on this situation. He did not want to over react, or make a statement that would later be proven false. So far, through his not responding by firing missiles and engaging troops other than a contingent of Marines to shore up security at the embassy, it seems the Presidents actions are not designed to garner electoral votes. Instead, he has taken the time needed to deal with the situation. It was then said that the President boarded a plane for Las Vegas for a fund-raiser. At a time when the nation as a whole is mourning, and grieving the loss of the Ambassador the President is off somewhere campaigning. Well, let us remember that Air Force One has all the high-tech gizmos and gadgets needed to conduct the duties of the president. He does not need to sit in the White House. However, during the hearings the President was at the White House. And throughout the process Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been actively involved including testifying at the closed-door Senate Hearings.
While I concur, we need a strong presence in the Mid East to deal with just this sort of situation, I do not agree with the conduct of the Romney campaign. It is customary that a candidate does not interfere with the actions of a sitting President. Instead at such times he supports the President, and avoids active campaign criticism of the administration response to a given situation, such as this.
This is the second time now that Mr. Romney has jumped the gun, commenting on something too soon, or something he might have better left alone.
I am apparently not the only one holding such a position, because his own Party Officials were just as critical as well as concerned about his response. Since then, he continues to decline in the polls. As this situation continues to unroll he might lose even more.
Yet another sad commentary about the apparent infighting within the Romney campaign.
However, this thing is still not over. Nothing has moved so far Right or Left that Obama is going down for the final dunk. Nothing has really indicated that Romney is dead in the water either. This campaign is predicted to go down to the wire. It is also expected to be close, too close to call.
That’s my point of view. I look forward to your insights on this campaign and all the events that sway it on a daily basis. Until then…..Have a great day and as usual……God Bless America!
