Breaking News:  After saying that The Horton Journal would take a break from the rigors of politics and instead ponder the current political situation and enjoy the World Series, this breaking News has caused us to go to print.  Breaking News events are the only thing that would permit this decision, and it did not take me long to decide on this course because I think that so much hangs on it as well as the up-coming elections.

According to Reuters News;  Officials at the White House as well as the State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. Diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012. They were also made aware that an Islamic Militant group had claimed responsibility for the attack which after a seven hour fire fight resulted in the death of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

American officials however maintained that the attacks were most likely the result of an American video, produced by an American, which insulted Islam, was the primary cause of the attacks that took place throughout the Mid-East. Administration officials, including White House spokesperson Jay Carney, citing unclassified assessments prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were spontaneous in protest against the anti-Muslim film.

While officials did mention the possible involvement of militant extremists, they did not lay blame on any specific group or links to Al Qaeda or its affiliates until intelligence officials publicly alleged that on September 28th.

U.S. Intelligence officials have maintained since shortly after the attacks that early intelligence reporting about the incident was mixed.

The White House and State Department have not commented on the e-mails in question.

However, there were clear indications that there was a dangerous situation in progress. The U.S. State Department was very much aware that there were security problems at the embassy, and that there had been requests for more security because of the anniversary of 911 and reports that there could be demonstrations and what might amount to a dangerous situation.  However, that support did not come.

So now the questions are coming. Who knew what and when did they know it.  The issue of security can be placed at the feet of Congress for cutting security funds to the embassies, but the question of U.S. response is one that will hamper the Obama Administration, because military response capability was no more than one hour away.  Instead, there was no real meaningful response, and it took weeks for the FBI to arrive to investigate the crime scene.

Hillery Clinton said that over-all she is responsible for the embassies in that they are under State Department control, and she is Secretary of State.  But why did the President not respond to the crisis. Some are angered because in the midst of the unfolding situation he departed Washington for a Political Fund raiser, attempting, it seemed to put the matter behind him.

Conservative Republicans meanwhile, are in an up-roar over the latest findings. They claim that the White House had said it was not aware of the unfolding events. Now, the release of the e-mails clarify that in fact the White House was aware of the situation. Not only that, but they were aware of the crisis as it unfolded.  They maintain however, that the information out of Benghazi was confusing.

The Horton Journal has maintained that there were two areas where events could cost President Obama this election. Of course there is the American economy, and then there is Foreign Affairs.  On Foreign Affairs, all we need is the blow up of a serious situation in the Mid-East, such as Israel and Iran, or a situation such as this one reported here today.

No doubt, the Presidents numbers are slipping. In some polls the President is drifting behind, and Romney is moving up. Two polls place Romney ahead in the Presidential race by as much as 50%. One poll, as I understand, place’s Governor Romney up to 57%.

None of this is good for President Obama.

No doubt Friends, these developments warrant watching.  I think the situation is more serious than some pundant’s think. My reasoning, is that if this thing heads in the direction of a Watergate like situation, and the question of what the President knew, and when did he know it, as well as the answers he returns, look like stonewalling, or lying for that matter, it might very well cost him the election as we watch the numbers take a nose dive.

That is my opinion, for what it’s worth.  But these concerns have been voiced before, and now, it seems they are coming to fruitation. I look forward though to your response. and hope to hear your input on this issue and other matters pertaining to Campaign 2012. Until then, have a great day and as usual………..God Bless America!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled World Series Base Ball Game!
