I tell ya no one could have dreamed up such a plot as we have witnessed in the matter of now former CIA Director David H. Petraues. Imagine it, no, witness it before your very eyes. I mean this is the stuff great novels are made of.
The director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency suddenly resigns citing an affair with his biographer after a marriage of 37 years. It turns out the biographer has is in the midst of a spat with another girl who is having an affair with yet another high level general, the command general of the troops in Afghanistan. The whole thing seems to come apart when the FBI discovers the affair, and the CIA Director is forced to resign. and the plot just continues to thicken. Was the President involved? Why would the FBI be so concerned about an extra-marital affair. Who is this other girl, and on and on it goes.
There is only one problem with this plot….It’s true. It is not a Novel. As a result garbage is being strewn all over Washington.
This all started when the FBI opened an investigation as to whether a computer used by Mr. Petraeus had been compromised. In the course of that inquiry, the investigators discovered the relationship. It remains unclear exactly when the investigation actually began. It is also unclear how it evolved into an inquiry about the status of Petreaus as to whether the relationship was still going on. As a result, Mr. Petraeus submitted his resignation to President Obama citing the affair. Mr. Petraeu’s decision to resign and the admission of the affair represent a remarkable fall from grace of one of Americas most prominent figures in Americas modern military and intelligence community, a commander who helped lead the nation’s war on terror in the decade after the 911 attacks and was credited as well with turning around a failing war in Iraq.
Petraeus almost single-handedly forced a profound evolution in the countries military thinking with his philosophy of counterinsurgency, which focus more on protecting the civilian population than on killing the enemy.
In as much that Mr. Petraeus was so brilliant in the area of military philosophy, and execution, it is rather disturbing to consider how he could get involved in such an extramarital affair which if discovered would certainly set ruin to his entire career. That is exactly what happened in this case. All Washington is a-buzz with rumors and counter rumors, as we watch a remarkable man fall from grace. However, his caliber speaks for him not only in his wise decision to resign, but his admission to failure in his personal life. He did the right thing.
However even after all that, more questions are rising. One that I ponder on is trying to understand why the FBI would be investigating the director of the CIA. He had been directer for 14 months and had already undergone a tense investagatory process, just to clear him for the top Dog in the Spy Agency, Director of The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and then suddenly he is the target of an investigation of this nature.
Hold on, wait a minute, whats this? It was found out that Paula Broadwell, the author who wrote his biography and in the midst became his secret lover, is also suspected of storing significant amounts of military documents, including classified material, at her home, potentially in violation of federal law. A source familiar with the case told ABC News that Broadwell admitted to the FBI she took the documents from a secure government building. The government demanded that they all be returned, and when federal agents decended on her home in North-Carolina that it was in fact a pre-arranged meeting.
The FBI also found classified material on a computer handed over to them by her as well.
Then there is the general in charge of the troops in Afghanistan, who is being charged with inappropriate use of communication equipment in texting another woman who knows Broadwell, and they both had a conflict over Petreaus in the past. One of the questionable texts said in response to her text about seeing him on TV the night before, “Thats nice of you Sweet-heart”. he said in response to her compliment. Well, if the that is the extent of inappropriate texting, then where’s the deal. If there was something more juicy than that I am sure the press would have used that instead.
I have been saying when considering the extent of this matter, that there is something here more than meets the eye. I feel as if we the people, are being hand fed the information the CIA and White House want us to know. There has got to be more to this than we all know. I mean, ask yourself this, ‘How many presidents have been caught in affairs while in the White House. Lets see? Franklin Roosevelt, then the was Former General and President Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson was a bad boy too. Of course, who could ever forget Bill Clinton’. Yet, here we are supposed to believe that the director of the CIA is supposed to just resigned and toss his integrity and reputation down the toilet over an extramarital affair that was discovered by the FBI.
The real concern here is the compromising of Confidential Military Documents that were in the hands of Mistress Broadwell who had been in the military and therefore had access to such confidential material.
Many think this is the result of the Libyan affair where a US Diplomat was assassinated during an attack on a U.S. Embassy installation. That the CIA Director knew all the details, and to shut him down, exposed the affair forcing the General to resign. There were questions as to why the United States was unable to get to the scene soon enough to save lives. What took the U.S. so long to respond. What did the President know…..When did he know it. What did the CIA Director know….. When did he know it? Was there a cover up of the actual details of the event. What actually occurred. Now there is this affair between the Director of CIA, and as the plot thickens we find out that his Lady on the Side, was in possession of secret or classified documents that were taken from a government secure site.
Now, former General and CIA director Patraeus will testify under oath before Senate and House Intelligence Committees, in closed session of course, as to the events in Libya and the death of a U.S. Ambassador . We can only wonder what the results of those meetings will produce. And what information We The People will be fed, in another vain effort to smooth over the actual details of this messy, destructive, sad and sordid affair!
Like I said, it is the stuff great Spy Novels are made of. Only in this case folks, its reality.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings. Until then, have a good night.
And as usual………God Bless America!
