Good day, it seems we have breaking news on all fronts today. Could it be that Congressional Senators and Representatives are finally ready to come to the table and actually avoid a fiscal cliff. The issue of course is U.S. deficit reduction and a looming deadline of December 31, 2012. According to CNN News both sides have met this morning at the White House and the President and seem to understand that every effort has to be made to avoid such a crisis. Based on what I’m hearing, at least a frame-work is in place and they are working to build upon it. However, based on past history, December seems a long way off.
Meanwhile, General David Petraeus has met behind closed doors with both Senate and House special committees to explain what happened in Libya and the attack which resulted in the death of a U.S. Ambassador. It seems that first reports indicated that the attacks were a response to the film condemning Islam. But it was later discovered that it was a terrorist event. Some have said that it might have been terrorist taking advantage of the situation there to cover up their presence. There will be more on this story, I am sure.
Then there is the Petraeus extra-marital affair which continues to mystify even myself. But it seems that both of the lady friends had gotten into a jealous tiff over the good General, spilled the beans and it ended up getting out of hand. The next thing you know the General/CIA director is out of a job and still another general in Afghanistan is in trouble as well. Sounds more and more like a soap opera to me.
Meanwhile, in a still developing story, here on the home front, there has been a serious explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on an oil rig. Several people seriously injured and from immediate reports from the scene two are missing. I noted that from a picture shown on CNN that the explosion is quite extensive. Whether there is any oil leak at this time is unknown. Yet another story that bears watching. Interesting, is it not? Just in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.
But the big news, is Israel. Jerusalem has been struck by missiles for the first time in 20 years in the ongoing military strife between Israel and Hamas. Of course this situation seems close to getting completely out of control blowing up into all out war. As it stands an arranged cease-fire has failed. Instigated by Israel, the cease-fire was to assure the safety of Egyptian officials in the area protesting Israels actions assassinating the leader of Hamas military. However, it fell through when Hamas fired missiles into Israel from the Gaza Strip, and those missiles struck the outskirts of Jerusalem. Now, from the latest reports I have seen Israel has called up reserve troops and tanks are gathering at the Gaza border. It could be a ground offensive is being prepared, which means an escalation of an already serious mid-east crisis.
And where is our President during this very serious, tense situation? He is dealing with the fiscal crisis, dealing with the Petraeus affair, having lunch with Congressional leaders, but has not even issued a statement regarding the developing events in the Mid-East. And people wonder why I have serious reservations with U.S. Foreign Policy.
I will keep my wary eye on the developments of the day. But, the wife is ready to run here, there and everywhere, as we prepare for Thanksgiving.
Until later, have a great day and as usual God Bless America.
