For me, like any other American it was Friday. For those of us in Michigan it the end of a very rough and emotional week. We had already experienced raw politics like we had never experienced before. We were tired, and some of us quite frankly concerned about our future. Michigan had just become a free work State. That means that people can no longer be forced to be in a Union as a condition of employment. I won’t go into all that right now. It is just important to note that the rough and raw emotional week was finally over.
It was around 10:35 am, and I was listening to the Gerardo Rivera Show on AM Radio, when he suddenly stopped his talking point in mid sentence and said “Hold on, we have breaking news out of New town Ct. about multiple injuries at an Elementary School. I actually thought it was a Gas Explosion or something of that nature. After all this is a small town, in a rural community. Then the nightmare started. FOX News reported that there had been a shooting at an Elementary School, and that at least two persons had been shot. Then the rush of bulletins began.
10:50 am New town Ct. Multiple reports confirmed that two individuals were involved in some kind of altercation at an Elementary School. One shooter reported dead in what looked like a work place violent situation. It was reported that the school Shady Nook Elementary was in lock down. According to inital reports one shooter was dead at the scene. Many students were reported as being escorted from the building. It was later learned that these students were taken to a near-by fire station across the street from the school. At that time,it was unknown if any students had been injured. All America held their collective breath.
At 11:10 The story begins to develop. It becomes obvious that something horrific has happened in this small town. According to the details being released a shooter had somehow gained access to the building and proceeded to the schools office. He allegedly shot the school principal . Reports were still raw, reports were coming in by cell phone, and reliability of some of the callers was in question. One thing was sure, shots had been fired, and at least one person was dead. The question of child safety was still at issue.
However, almost immediately we heard that at least one child had been shot. Rumors flew that the shooter was dead, and there might have been more than one shooter. Withen moments it was reported that three people were shot, one was dead. But listeners were cautioned that these reports were unconfirmed. Reporters were en route to the scene from Nearby Hartford. We were soon informed that three persons had been transported to a hospital in Dunberry Ct.
Reports circulated that a red car with its back window blown out by gun fire was seen leaving the school heading for Dunberry Ct. Now the schools there went into lock down as well. By now I am riveted to the radio waiting for news on the unfolding story taking place so many miles away.
Finally though the story begins to develop. It is confirmed that three people had in fact been admitted to a Dunsberry Hospital suffering gun shot wounds.
11:45 am, It is reported that multiple people had been killed at the elementary school in New town. Some of those fatalities were students. WTIC TV reported that one of the reported dead was the gunman. Rumors continued to circulate that the principle was among the dead. The rumor though was still unconfirmed. Now police confirmed that there were two shooters. one is still at large. Soon however, it was reported that police had withdrawn that claim. No explanation was given.
CBS News reported that 27 people had been killed, and students were among the fatalities. According to reports the Gun Man was from New Jersey and his father lived in New Town. That of course would be changed later in the day. But for the moment it was obvious that something more than horrific had happened in this small rural community. It was reported that President Obama had been informed of the mass shootings as well.
Gerardo went off the air, and soon was replaced by the Rush Limbaugh Show. He reported almost immediately that 27 people had been killed at the school. 18 of them were students. 3 persons had been admitted to a hospital. It becomes more evident that a 20-year-old shooter is dead at the scene. No motive had been given for the shootings. According to CBS News a young boy had been wondering the hall, trying to get out of the building. As he came down the hall shots were being fired in his direction, a teacher open up the door to his or her class room and pulled him inside to safety, obviously saving his life. It is 2:37 pm when I receive my last report. I go off duty at my job at 3:00pm. The shooters name is Ryan Lanza, he resides in New Jersey, later we would learn that he was mentally ill, confirmed to be a sociopath. Not good news, I thought.
It was confirmed that 27 people had been murdered, 18 of them were children. 3 individuals admitted to a nearby hospital. CNN News confirmed the reports saying that 30 persons were injured. 27 shot, 18 of them children, and three admitted to a hospital. For the moment, that was the extent of the day. A day spent riveted to a radio, with one mere glance at a TV during a quick break.
It was another horrific day. It was ten minutes to 3:00pm, and yeah……I was ready to go home. Like many Grand parents, and parents all over this great nation, I will hug my grand kids a little tighter today, and without them noticing wipe a tear way in memory of the 30 dead people at least 27 of them mere babies, innocent children who lost their life for nothing more than being in the right place at the wrong time.
As I compose this article, the story of what actually happened in this small town is still developing. We are just starting to learn about the shooter, brother and his father. His mother died as well I might add. She was the first victim of this tragic filled day. Shot in the face by the shooter who then stole three guns from her home and went directly to shady Nook elementary School and performed the unthinkable.
May God bless our country, comfort the families who lost their child, and a small town called New-Town Ct.
This has not been the greatest week on the calendar. Not by a long shot. I’m just glad it’s over.
Pray for the people in New Town, and as usual………….God Bless America!
