There are those advocating severe Gun Control Legislation in the aftermath of New-Town. They see this as the only answer. Their lobbies are hard at work to get the guns away from everyone. This they are sure, will stop the senseless killing that seems to be out of control across the United States. At least that’s what they say.
However, I do not agree. I have said before that if we were to take the guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, Then too it will be open season for every law-abiding citizen in The United States. I mean, come on now, do you honestly believe that the thieves are just going to go in and hand their guns over to the police? Do you honestly believe that terrorists will just show up one day and see the light, hand over their guns and call it good? Do you really think that by eliminating all guns from the whole country that the crime rate will just drop away and all will be well? Really? And you been living in what fantasy land? Taking what?
Get real. Severe gun control legislation is not going to resolve the problem. What is going to act to really deal with the tragedies that all of us abhor is dealing with the crux of the problem. That is taking a serious look at the state of our nations Mental Health System. Getting guns out of the hands of the severest mentally ill, and dealing with the severest of mentally ill cases that are hiding throughout American society.
Since the budget reductions of Mental Health programs in every state, many severe mentally ill patients end up in prisons. They end up in half way houses, and often fall through the cracks. Or, they are with family. The problem is that all too often, families can not get the help they need, because the budget is so depleted that programs are severely limited. Most treatment programs are short-term, quick fix and not long-term designed to cure. In short, since the Kennedy introduction of de-institutionalization the Nations Mental Health System has depleted to a shambles of a condition. It is therefore no wonder that we have such mass killings that are usually the result of a misguided, seriously mentally disturbed, patient that has gone over the edge.
To rationalize this by saying hey! These folks have rights too, is not going to slice the cake. I was taught a long ago to realize that my rights end where the other guys rights begin. The rights, welfare and safety of the general public is at stake. The time has come to seriously deal with the challenging topic of Americas Mental Health System, and set forth to do something about it. It will not be easy. We all know that. But, Gun Control Legislation is nothing more than an attempt at a political quick fix. It is nothing more than an attempt to appease an angry public. However, The results will be just as tragic as before. There will be another Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, as well as Jonesboro. And then another round of trying to appease an angry public with a quick fix solution. Politicians hate dealing with reality.
We need to take politics out of the equation, and put reality in it’s place.
That’s my point of view. As usual I look forward to your insights on the issues of the day, until then………Have a great day and as usual …………. God Bless America!
