FERGUSON UNREST FUELED BY OUTSIDERS LOOKING FOR POLITICAL GAIN.

Ferguson, Mo – IN THE DAYS SINCE AN UNARMED TEEN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN FERGUSON, MO, UNREST AND OVERNIGHT LOOTING HAVE RAISED QUESTIONS ON THE HANDLING OF SUCH SITUATIONS AND WHETHER EVEN AFTER SO MUCH EXPERIENCE IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT MANY WONDER IF WE REALLY EVER HAD IT RIGHT.

In the aftermath of a shooting of an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Mo by a white police officer on August 9th state and local law enforcement officials have swerved from one approach to another in an attempt to quell uncontrolled looting and street riots that now seem to be out of control. While legitimate protesters, trying to make what they see are valid points and raising real questions as to what actually occurred that night, there are those as far away as California and New York who hit the streets at night advocating unrest, drumming up trouble and some trying to make a name for themselves. While State and local officials have called for the streets to clear at night so they can return to some sense of normalcy, the pleas have been in vain.

Meanwhile, what is a racially charged riot, demonstration complete ,with looting without the presence of the most honorable Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton?   Primarily in the case of Jackson, whose own city is practically a war zone in South Chicago, the good reverand might serve us all better if he could be of some use in bringing a sense of normalcy to his own city rather than worrying so much about the plight of other cities that he probably had to google up before venturing in, so that he might first have some sense as to where Ferguson is, much less understanding any of the cities actual history in the area of racial or ethnic discrimination, before fleasing the flock.

.

Then of course there is our president who still can not figure out when to respond. It seems that President Obama spends more time playing gulf and on some sunny vacation than he does worrying about the affairs of state these days. Oh, you could see the sense of disappointment on both the Presidents daughter and his own face for that matter, as they disembarked the helicopter, when their vacation was so rudely interrupted by the likes of some place called Ferguson, in some state called Missouri. How dare them!

Then the President goes on TV, neutral of course, making it clear that law and order must be re-established, violence must be quelled, and laws must be followed. Of course when there is injustice by the police you can be assured all the resources of your national government will be there to assure your rights are observed.  Hint—Hint.

Meanwhile, what always seems the case, this president is once again late for the picnic. Waiting for a last minute approach, when he should have been calling for calm when the first window was broken. Instead, he waits until the streets of Ferguson look like a war ravaged war zone, before he steps up to a mic and says something that no one is paying attention to anyway. All this boy’s mother knows is her son is dead. All she knows is that his bullet riddled body lays in a funeral home being prepared for viewing, but as her city explodes in violence, looting and riots out of control, answers to how and why her son was gunned down are still waning.

Our Presidents answer is a Federal Grand Jury. Why? Because it is an open and shut case of racial discrimination? Because racial en-equality is out of control in Ferguson?  I think not. Ferguson was not even on the map before August 9th. There must be something more here.

In a nutshell as I understand the details, on the night of August 9th, Michael Brown enters a convenance store and steals a pack of cigars. As he races out the door he shoves the store proprietor aside. No one is hurt. It’s only a pack of cheap cigars. From what I gather police were called and a while later the boy is stopped by police. That’s when the story gets murky. What few witnesses noted the event say that a scuffle apparently ensued, the boy ends up on top of the cop on the hood of the car. the police officers weapon is fought over, and suddenly the boy is said to be backing off hands in the air. The cop fires at least six shots killing the teen and the rest is history.

Some witnesses who have spoken with the officer say that the police officer says that there was a fight over the gun. That the officer fired in obvious self-defense. Some are saying that the gun shots and forensic evidence indicate that the officer in the heat of the moment, thinking his life was in danger fired the six hots in panic.

However, after all the rioting, looting, and demonstrating. After all the allegations of civil rights violation, it seems to me that in the end someone is going down. Even if the police officer is innocent, after all this there is no way that he would be set free. No way that the Feds will allow him out the door. I can Hear Jessie and Al now, hollering this is full proof of the hate toward blacks in America. That the whole investigation was a sham, that a guilty cop goes free while en-equality becomes the norm in a city called Ferguson.

That’s what is so bothersome about this whole affair. I do not know if this officer is guilty or not. I too question why, allegedly a police officer would pump six shots into an unarmed teen, with his hands raised in the air,  even if he did steal a cheap pack of cigars. Something happened that dark night. But now, after all this it is all too obvious we might never know the whole truth. Why? Because now that the FBI and Justice Officials walking the streets trying to glean the facts, with the National Guard making Ferguson look like some police state, with a president that has no idea what to do, the answers, the facts…..The truth might never be known. The truth, justice, law, order, all replaced by politics.

And in politics my friends, someone is going down.  Yep, we still don’t have it right.

About THE HORTON JOURNAL A POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE

I am 62 years old. I've been blogging for several years. I am into History and Politics as well as currant events. The latter being the main issues covered on these pages. I was a Community Advocate for twenty years, and a volunteer aide in a State Representatives Office in my home state of Michigan. While I have basically ceased these activities, I still watch the world around me closely and report on it as much as I can, which I might add is often. I encourage comments on my Blogs. I only ask that we keep our opinions clean and without insults threats or intimidation. I hope you take time to read The Horton Journal, and look forward to your comments.
