An American journalist thought to be next on the list for execution after the beheading death of James Foley at the hands of the terrorist group ISIS, was released from Syria after two years in captivity. There was a real fear Theo Peter Curtis might be next up for execution by ISIS after threats that if the US did not back off in the Mid East another journalist would be killed.
The Obama administration is thrilled at the release of Curtis in Tel Aviv after the White House announced the release yesterday. With the President’s Foreign Policy waning in the Middle East, the release of Curtis offers a ray of hope for President Obama who needs to be able to point to an improved foreign policy, although it is not expected that this release will have that kind of political impact. It will show though that the White House is capable of handling the logistics of such a release with all its complexities and political questions.
ISIS is sweeping across the Mid East, taking over large tracts in Iraq, and threatening Syria, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, as well as Israel. The newest terrorists groups has threatened the United States causing serious questions about the ability to safeguard our borders from terrorists entering the country. While Homeland Security declares that they are able to prevent this, others are openly saying that they have serious reservations as to whether our borders are as secure as we thought them to be.
But ISIS remains the topic of continuous discussions at the highest levels of government. This particular group is far more vicious than any other group we have dealt with. what’s more, they are more organized, better trained, and have enjoyed funding that has placed them as a real and serious threat to security at an international level. They have military weaponry, including tanks. They have thus wreaked havoc across the Mid East. Their particular brand of terror has raised the hackles on the backs of many people in the areas they now dominate. They have beheaded, and even crucified Christians, and a whole range of innocent children, and adults as well as elder people. They have promised to raise their flag over the White House.
Higher level US officials are addressing their threat. they recognize that they are well funded, and well organized. They have big money, and have acquired military hardware.
Dealing with them is going to have to be a coalition effort, and that can not be done without the participation as well as money from the United States.
While the release of this Journalist is great news, and I have no problem complimenting the President when he gets it right, What is needed now is a strong, unified, organized effort to wipe SISI out of existence. It needs to be done quickly so that their back is broken before they have the chance to swell their numbers so high,
That though is going to be a major challenge for this President. Mid-Term elections, on the horizon, Democrats could lose the Senate. Many in the Mid East do not trust President Obama. coupled with many Americans who want more out their government, and find themselves deeply misinformed when it comes to this presidents response when it comes to foreign policy issues.
I only hope we can meet the challenge.
